## ECDIS Chart Provisioning

**NSR ECDIS NES-3000** supports reading and display of **ENCs** in **IHO S-57** format, edition 3.1. ENCs are provided by chart data providers as exchange sets, in accordance with the **IHO S-63** standard, in encrypted form. **NSR ECDIS NES-3000** can also install unencrypted ENCs provided they include the mandatory `CATALOG.031` file.

```{important}
Exchange sets without the **`CATALOG.031`** file are not supported!
```

Exchange sets are transmitted via Internet services (**e-mail**, **FTP**) together with **X.509 root certificates** and **cell permits** required for decrypting ENC cells. To install ENCs in ECDIS, the data must be written to a {doc}`prepared </sections/general-information/removable-media-preparation/index>` **USB medium**.

Ordering ENCs requires a **User Permit**, confirming that the software manufacturer has passed the **IHO S-63** standard compliance check and is a registered IHO OEM.

To avoid transmission errors, it is recommended to **save the USER PERMIT** as a text file on external media and send it to the provider by e-mail.

The received encrypted ENC data set contains: base ENC cells, ENC updates, external files (*.pdf, *.png, *.bmp, *.jpg, *.txt), IHO X.509 certificate (Scheme Administrator (SA) Digital Certificate), the `CATALOG.031` catalogue, and cell permits. The encrypted set may be packaged in a **\*.zip** or **\*.tar.gz** archive.

```{important}
ECDIS supports installation of certificates, ENC licenses, and charts from **zip** and **tar.gz** archives written to a USB medium. Installation of data from nested archives at the second level or deeper will not be performed.
The recommended file system for the USB medium is {doc}`**FAT32** </sections/general-information/removable-media-preparation/index>`.
It is **NOT** recommended to install ENC exchange sets from media containing large amounts of other data: ECDIS will require more time to scan all folders and archives on the medium.
```

```{important}
When installing a large ENC set (e.g., the world chart collection), the installation process may take a significant amount of time.
Installing update sets on large ENC collections may also take a considerable amount of time.
Consider these characteristics when managing the shipboard ENC collection and perform ENC installation and updates **well in advance**.
