BNWAS (Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System) — a system for monitoring watch alertness on the navigation bridge. ECDIS can connect to BNWAS and relay system alarms on the screen. BNWAS terminal devices (acknowledgement buttons) can be connected to both digital and discrete inputs of ECDIS.

BNWAS Connection

BNWAS connection and setup are performed in accordance with the procedure.

Important

Recommended interfaces for BNWAS connection: 61162-450 network or serial.

BNWAS connection settings window

Network parameters are configured for sending sentences to BNWAS.

No additional configuration of the button (dry contact) is required. Button (dry contact) actions are processed by ECDIS in the background.

BNWAS Operational Features

BNWAS generates warnings (audible or visual) according to its own algorithm. The officer of the watch must respond to the warning within the time limit established by internal procedures.

The response consists of operator actions on ECDIS (mouse movement or other action), or pressing the hardware button (dry contact).

ECDIS sends the $--EVE sentence over the 61162-450 network — the operator has performed an action. During active use of ECDIS, the $--EVE sentence is sent continuously.

If the operator ignores the BNWAS warning for any reason, the warning will be escalated to an alarm.

Note

Procedures, time delays, and BNWAS warning escalation periods are configured in BNWAS. ECDIS is a terminal device confirming the navigator’s alertness.
