NAVTEX

Connection, setup, and operational features of NAVTEX.

Menu path

Menu → Settings → Sensors → Add Sensor → NAVTEX

Purpose

When ECDIS is connected to a NAVTEX receiver, the system provides:

  • Reception of text navigation messages from the NAVTEX receiver;

  • Display of message content in a dedicated window;

  • Storage of previously received messages.

For convenient processing of received messages, the creation of user objects (Mariner’s Objects) is supported.

NAVTEX Receiver Connection

The sensor connection and setup are performed in accordance with the procedure.

Ensure that:

  • Received message processing is correctly configured;

  • Header processing is enabled;

  • Checksum verification is configured.

The NAVTEX receiver transmits sentences with the following header:

  • CR — data receiver

NAVTEX Operational Features

When a NAVTEX message is received, a notification will appear in the notification area.

Viewing received messages:

Menu path

Menu → Settings → Navtex

A list of all messages received from the NAVTEX receiver will open.

Note

Limitations:

  • ECDIS does not control the volume of stored messages.

  • ECDIS does not filter messages by coverage areas.

  • The navigator must independently filter incoming messages by transmitting station and type, depending on prevailing circumstances and conditions.

No.

Description

1

Message reception time;

2

Identifier of the station that transmitted the message;

3

Type of received message;

4

Number of messages in a composite (long) message;

5

Frequency on which the message was transmitted;

6

Status of the message received from the receiver;

7

Delete message;

8

Message not viewed;

9

10

Table filtration by transmitting station

11

Table filtration by type of received messages:

12

Table filtration by frequency on which messages were received:

13

Delete all — button to delete all messages in the table.

Important

Data filtration in the message table does not affect the filtration of data received from the NAVTEX receiver.

ECDIS receives all messages transmitted by the NAVTEX receiver.

To view the message text — click on the message row in the table.

No.

Description

1

Message text field. The message is displayed “as is” in the field; ECDIS does not correct or analyze the message text;

2

Add user object — button to go to the user objects creation window;

3

Back — return to the list of received messages;

Plotting objects on the chart is performed using user objects tools.

Note

To plot Mariner’s objects, the Mariner’s objects option must be enabled.

Select the object type corresponding to the nature of the navigation warning (point, area, circle, etc.).

No.

Description

1

Coordinates to UO — button to transfer recognized coordinates from the message to User Objects. If coordinates are not fully recognized, only recognized coordinate pairs will be transferred to UO; unrecognized values can be entered manually by the navigator. If coordinates are not recognized, a notification will be displayed in the message window:

When transferring coordinates, note that for a point object, select Point geometry; for an area object, select Area; for a circle, select Circle geometry;

2

Info to UO — button to transfer additional object information to UO.

If the selected object lacks an information attribute, a notification will be displayed in the message window:

3

Message text.

Important

The reason for the inability to recognize object coordinates in a received message depends not only on reception quality but also on the coordinate notation format. The coordinate notation format is not formalized in the standard.

If a situation arises where data can be read but ECDIS did not recognize the coordinates, take a photograph or screenshot of the screen and send a notification to the ECDIS manufacturer by completing the form.

The ECDIS manufacturer will add the new coordinate format, release a software update, and send it to your address.

Hint

Object coordinates can be corrected:

  • in the message text window when plotting the object;

  • in the user object coordinate input fields.

After saving the UO, the resulting object will be displayed on the chart.
