Vector types

True vectors

  • Own ship: Shows the actual direction and speed of the vessel’s movement over the ground

  • AIS targets, ARPA targets: Display the true direction and speed of target movement

  • Vector length: Proportional to speed and the set forecast time

Own ship relative vector

  • Heading + Log: Shows the vessel’s heading direction and speed through the water

  • Requirements: Heading and speed sensors are required

  • Application: To verify that actual movement matches the set heading

Target relative motion vectors

  • Purpose: Show target movement in relative motion

  • Application: For assessing collision risk and maneuvering

  • Calculation: via the velocity triangle

Display parameters

Parameter

Value range

Recommendations

Track length

1-999 minutes

30-60 minutes for normal navigation

Time mark step

1-60 minutes

5-10 minutes for detailed monitoring

Vector length

1-999 minutes

6-12 minutes for forecasting

Vector mark step

1-60 minutes

2-5 minutes for accurate forecasting

Caution

Own ship vectors and all target vectors must be configured synchronously to avoid misinterpretation of the situation.

Vessel outlines

Important

The True scale outline function displays vessels at chart scale according to their dimensions. If heading data is unavailable, the function is disabled.

Working with VDES targets

Important

The VDES target vector is only constructed if the VHF radio station broadcasts the $PNAVRIS (18) sentence or the $--VDO sentence Message 1, 2, or 3.

VDES target settings are synchronized with AIS target settings.

VDES target characteristics

  • Identification: By MMSI code instead of name

  • Vectors: Available when data is transmitted correctly

  • Tracks: Displayed similarly to AIS targets

  • Outlines: Not supported

Warning

In high traffic density, disable target name display to reduce screen clutter.

Note

All vector and trajectory settings are saved automatically and applied to all new targets appearing on the screen.
