NAVTOR SDK  v.3.0
Software Development Kit for fast and efficient development of ECDIS, ECS and generic marine applications
AML

Portrayal Specification Description – General

The AML Portrayal Specification defines symbols and rules for the display of vector AML datasets and supports AML 1.0, 2.1 and 3.0 vector products. It is based on the IHO ECDIS PRESENTATION LIBRARY 4.0.2 (July 2017).

A portrayal specification which provides display rules and symbols for AML vector product specifications (supporting all versions) was endorsed by NATO GMWG (Geospatial Maritime Working Group).

Version 3.0.0 of GMWG specifications is used for NAVTOR AML presentation library.

NOTE: the SDK v.3.0 only provides AML presentation for software rendering. AML presentation for GL rendering will be available in future versions of the SDK.

AML Vector Products (Layers)

The following NATO Approved AML Product Specifications is supported by NAVTOR AML Presentation Library:

  • Contour Line Bathymetry (CLB), Version 2.1
  • Environment, Seabed and Beach (ESB), Version 2.1
  • Large Bottom Objects (LBO), Version 2.1
  • Maritime Foundation and Facilities (MFF), Version 2.1
  • Routes, Areas and Limits (RAL), Version 2.1
  • Small Bottom Objects (SBO), Version 2.1

NOTE: these specifications are compatible with specifications of version 1.0.

Version 3.0 (August 2008) combines 6 mentioned above vector specifications into a single product specification.

NOTE: AML gridded data (Integrated Water Column (IWC) and other) is not supported.

Object and Attribute Catalogues

The NAVTOR AML Feature and Attribute Catalogue (aml.fct) is compatible with AML Object and Attribute O&A Catalogue, Version 1, v 1.1.6, Object and Attribute O & A Catalogue version 2 & 2.1, v2.3.3, and AML Feature and Attribute Catalogue v 3.0.1.

Product Specification Values for AML Vector Products

Presentation of AML Layers (Products) for Version 1.x and 2.x may be switched ON/OFF by the value of PRSP subfield of DSID field. The following values of PRSP are defined for AML:

Layer (Product) Name Layer(Product)  abbreviation PRSP value Scaled/Non-Scaled
Maritime Foundation and Facilities MFF {51} Scaled
Routes, Areas and Limits RAL {52} Non-Scaled
Large Bottom Objects LBO {53} Non-Scaled
Contour Line Bathymetry CLB {54} Scaled
Environment, Seabed and Beach ESB {55} Scaled
Small Bottom Objects SBO {56} Non-Scaled

The PRSP value for the AML version 3.0 is set to {57}.

AML Symbology

For AML objects, which intersect with the objects defined in S-57 ENC Feature & Attribute Catalogue (AML ENC objects), symbolization from S-52 ENC Symbol Catalogue is used (Addendum to IHO Presentation Library, version 4.0.(2)). Look-Up Tables for Paper chart point symbolization, Lines symbolization and Areas with symbolized boundaries symbolization from IHO Presentation Library, version 4.0(.2) are used. Simplified points symbolization and Area Plain boundary symbolization are not used in NATO GMWG specifications.

For symbolizations of specific AML objects defined in the AML Feature & Attribute Catalogue, portrayal specification and correspondent Look-Up tables of NATO GMWG (version 3.0.0) are used.

Viewing Group Implementation

For presentation flexibility, two general Viewing Group Layers are implemented: Layer for AML ENC objects and Layer for AML specific objects.

The structure of AML Viewing Group Layers is the following:

Viewing Group Layer Name of VG Layer VG Sub-Layer Name of Sub-Layer
57000000 Additional Military Layers
  57100000

AML ENC objects

57110000 AML ENC Base
57120000 AML ENC Standard
57130000 AML ENC Other
      57200000

AML objects

57210000 AML Base
57220000 AML Standard
57230000 AML Other

The structure of the AML ENC objects Layer is similar to the structure of ECDIS Viewing Group Implementation of IHO Presentation library, but for the purpose of flexibility the Objects Viewing Group numbers are increased – multiplied by 100. This permits to process (switch ON/OFF) objects identical in ENC and AML separately.

Viewing Groups are defined in the display_groups.xml file in the AML portrayal section.
